Madeleine Davis Memorial Lecture 2026 with Lesley Caldwell: Thinking With and About Winnicott in Very Unsettled Times
SQUIGGLE ONLINE
This paper celebrates the tenth anniversary of the publication of the Collected Works of D.W. Winnicott by returning briefly to its two launches in 2017: the first at The New School in New York City and the second at the British Psychoanalytical Society in London.
In New York, Helen Taylor Robinson asked how much the Collected Works might reveal Winnicott’s work unfolding in ways that echo the unconscious processes at the heart of psychoanalysis itself, presenting him as he did not know himself, let alone as we do not fully know him yet.
In London, the President of the International Psychoanalytical Association, Stefano Bolognini, commented on Winnicott’s intrinsic contribution to what he regards as, on the one hand, the contemporary capacity of the majority of analysts to share a common ground in the multi-faceted area of psychoanalytic theories, and, on the other, his absolutely unique capacity to convey to ordinary people an understanding of the basics of extremely important psychoanalytic ideas.
My paper begins from these two perspectives and explores what the Winnicott who appears across those twelve volumes may offer now both to clinicians and to a wider readership in our own very anxiety-provoking and distressing times.

Through artistic expression we can hope to keep in touch with our primitive selves whence the most intense feelings and even fearfully acute sensations derive, and we are poor indeed if we are only sane.
