Countertransference: subtle and unsubtle dimensions.

A study morning to consider current thinking about the clinical manifestations and implications of countertransference.

The Margaret Little Bequest Lecture speakers are Geraldine Shipton & Jennifer Johns who are both Fellows of the British Psychoanalytical Society.

  • Geraldine Shipton lives in Sheffield where she has a private practice and was previously a Senior Lecturer in Psychotherapeutic Studies at the University of Sheffield. She has an interest in the relationship between the mind and the body, including psychosomatic illness and eating disorder. Her publications include: ‘Working with Eating Disorders: a Psychoanalytic Approach’ (2004).
  • Jennifer Johns is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and a former Director and Chair of Trustees of the Squiggle Foundation. Her publications include Within Time and Beyond Time: A Festschrift for Pearl King (2001) (ed) & The Ailment and Other Psychoanalytic Essays (1989) (ed).

A bequest to Squiggle from Margaret Little’s estate makes it possible to offer this study morning at a reduced fee.
  • Margaret Little (1901-1994), physician and psychoanalyst, was a key figure in the development of the Independent Group in psychoanalysis. She challenged the previous understanding of inhibitions in free associative processes and placed particular emphasis on appreciating the clinical implications of countertransference for both patient and analyst. Her major publication is Transference Neurosis and Transference Psychosis. Toward Basic Unity. (1981) which contains seminal work on this complex area.
